Born and raised in Brooklyn, and the oldest of three children, Richie got his first taste of diving at age 9, when his father took him to a scuba diving class. In 1973 the family relocated to Florida, and Richie became a certified scuba diver at age 15.
His early diving included spear fishing, tropical fish collecting, and basic cave diving. After moving back to the Northeast in 1980, Richie had his first experience with wreck diving, a passion that has remained with him ever since. He was soon invited to become a member of the "Atlantic Wreck Divers", a group of experienced divers who taught him the basics of survival in an increasingly deeper and more hostile diving environment.
In 1991, along with John Chatterton, Richie identified a mystery U-boat off the New Jersey coast as U-869, originally thought to have been sunk in Gibraltar. Their story was featured in the New York Times bestseller "Shadow Divers", and a movie by 20th Century Fox is in the works. Richie was also a co-host of the History Channel's Deep Sea Detectives, and has hosted a number of specials including the hit 2006 "Titanic's Missing Pieces".
