Dive Portal visits Yap Island, in the Pacific Ocean, an unspoiled island paradise with virgin reefs and bountiful marine life. Yap has become world famous as the premier destination to observe giant manta rays, and the Dive Portal team gets up close and personal.
Dive Portal also follows Richie and Carrie on their dive to Vertigo Wall, the most spectacular reef drop-off in Yap, where the coral descends some 100 meters down into the tropical waters, and is a recently established shark feeding station.
Yap is also famous for its ancient stone money, giant discs of carved limestone originally transported to Yap from neighboring Palau some 500-600 years ago for use in ceremonial trades. Richie meets with a local Yappesian to learn more about the stones, some up to 12 feet in diameter and weighing thousands of pounds.
Dive Portal follows hosts John Chatterton and Richie Kohler to the USS Spiegel Grove, one of the largest artificial reefs in the World, located in Key Largo, Florida, and one of the World’s best places to train as a wreck diver.
From 1956 to its decommissioning in 1989, the USS Spiegel Grove, a United States Navy docking vessel, helped enforce America’s Cold War strategy of containment, which called for rushing troops and equipment to support friendly governments.
At the time of its sinking in 2002, the Spiegel Grove was the largest ship ever intentionally sunk to create a new reef for divers, and it remains one of the largest ships ever scuttled for that purpose.
Follow John and Richie on a series of advanced dive-throughs as they explore the interior of the massive ship.
Join John as he checks out what's changed and what's stayed the same since he trained to be a commercial diver not too long ago (actually, very long ago).
Dive Portal visits the International Diving Academy, where the next generation of commercial divers are trained in everything from underwater cutting and welding to Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).
John Chatterton visits the headquarters of DAN, the Diver’s Alert Network, an international dive organization devoted to the safety and health of recreational divers.
Founded in 1980, DAN has served as a lifeline for the scuba industry by operating diving’s only 24-hour emergency hotline. DAN also conducts vital medical research, and provides educational programs to divers and medical professionals.
Dive Portal interviews Dan Orr, head of the network, as well as Petar Denoble, one of the medical researches, and Jeff Myers, Vice President of Training.
John also takes a ride in the chamber, a large, air-locked room which simulates deep diving and decompression, used for DAN’s state of the art medical research.
John sits down with Leigh Bishop, a specialist in the field of deep shipwreck exploration and still underwater photography, regarded by many as a leader in the industry.
As an internationally renowned explorer, Leigh has been involved in many notable and pioneering shipwreck photography and preservation expeditions from famous Ocean liners to sensitive War losses as well as deep historically important sites of archaeological interest.
John asks him about his diving career, from tech to deep diving, his experiences with famous wrecks like the Lusitania, Carpathia and Britannic, and takes a closer look at his custom built underwater camera systems.
